Research & Development Engineer

Job Description

3Play Media is the leading provider of superior quality captions and interactive transcripts for publishers of digital media, including educational institutions, online media and eLearning providers, government agencies and the entertainment industry. Our unique process begins with automatic transcription and natural language processing to produce a draft transcript. Human experts then edit the draft, using our proprietary platform, which is optimized for cleaning up the machine output. Our large and growing database of audio and time-coded transcription provides a fertile basis for continually improving our product.

3Play seeks a dedicated, creative, adaptable, hands-on R&D engineer who will contribute to all aspects of product development, with special focus on applying machine learning and natural language processing technologies to large databases to improve our automated transcriptions, our operations, and our end-user products. In addition to familiarity with modeling and algorithms, this individual will need to employ rigorous scientific methodology to improve machine performance on real-world data, and will use clear and timely written communication to specify development plans and report on progress. Further, this job requires the coding and development skills to deploy these improvements in production, working with a small, collegial, agile, and results-oriented team.

While we emphasize ability – not credentials – the following attributes would likely benefit someone in this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field
  • Web software development experience
  • A record of contribution in NLP, machine learning, DSP or related areas
  • Knowledge of – or eagerness to learn – Ruby on Rails
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

About the Company

3Play Media is a rapidly growing, profitable start-up making a genuine impact on the way people consume online media. We help make video and audio accessible to everyone, and are focused on continually improving our customers’ experience. Since we got our start in 2007 out of MIT Sloan, we have been simplifying the typical transcription workflow through flexible APIs, a secure online account system, and integrations with players, platforms, and lecture capture systems. Our operational infrastructure is designed to maximize transcription throughput and quality at a fair price. We are constantly looking to incorporate new technologies into our system to improve these capabilities.

Work Environment

We love our company culture! We are currently a small team of seven developers working closely with each other and with others in the office, with no interest in drama or office politics. We have a spacious office with lots of natural light, a game room with beer and kombucha on tap, and a friendly dog named Bo who shares our views and ambitions (but not our interest in math jokes or riddles — no one’s perfect!). We’ve all made good friends within 3Play, and also enjoy 3Play hosted events including Summer retreats and game nights.
