Captions and Subtitles with Vimeo
This how-to guide instructs how to add closed captions or multilingual subtitles to your Vimeo videos. The process involves submitting your video file to 3Play Media for captioning and/or translation, then uploading the captions or subtitles to Vimeo.
Step 1 – Submit Your Video for Captioning
Note: Proceed to step 1.3 if you have access to the source video file and don’t need to download it from Vimeo.
1.1 Log into your Vimeo account and select Video > My Videos. Then click on the video that needs to be captioned.
1.2 Scroll down and click the Download button. Click the link to download the MP4 video file and save it to your computer.
1.3 Log into your 3Play Media account.
1.4 Select Direct Upload, specify the turnaround requirement, and upload the video file for processing.
1.5 You will receive an email alert when the captions are complete.
1.6 You can also translate the captions into many different languages and create subtitles.
Step 2 – Download Your Captions or Subtitles
2.1 Log into your 3Play Media account.
2.2 Click My Files and select your Vimeo video. Click Request Download.
2.3 Download the WebVTT caption format and save it to your computer.
Step 3 – Upload Your Captions or Subtitles to Vimeo
3.1 Log into your Vimeo account.
3.2 Select Videos from the top menu and click the settings icon in the top-right corner of the video thumbnail.
3.3 Select the Advanced menu and click Choose a Caption file to Upload
3.4 Select the WebVTT caption file that you downloaded in the previous step. Select the language and the type.
3.5 If you have translated subtitles, repeat the previous step for each language.
3.6 Click Save Changes and Return to Video. You should see a CC button in the bottom-right- corner of the Vimeo player. Users can turn the captions on/off or switch languages by clicking this button.
