Frequently Asked Questions About Captioning and Transcription
Every three months we hold a 30-minute webinar to give a brief overview of closed captioning for web video, including applicable legislation and the services that 3Play Media offers. At the end of each webinar, we open up the forum for questions: below is a compilation of the most common questions we receive.

The Process and Costs of Transcription and Captioning

1) How Much Do Captioning and Transcription Cost?

The cost is based on the length of the video. We charge either per minute or per hour, depending on the overall length of the video. There is no minimum fee per file: if you only have one minute of content, you only pay for one minute. We also provide volume discounts. A more detailed breakdown of the cost is available on our website.

2) Do You Charge Multiple Times for Multiple File Downloads?

No: because we process your files once, we only charge one time. You can download as many file formats as you want, as many times as you want.

3) Are Interactive Transcripts and Caption Plugins Free?

Yes, they are. Interactive transcripts and caption plugins are included in the starting cost as long as you use our captioning and transcription services.

4) What Is the Transcription and Captioning Process Like?

We use a three-step process for transcription and captioning. The first step is putting the content through automatic speech recognition software. Next, we have over 700 trained editors who go in and edit the generated transcript using an editing platform that we built. The editor adds speaker identification, punctuation, corrects all mistakes left by the engine, and adds non-verbal cues. Finally, we put it through a quality check, where a trained QA editor goes through again to look for any remaining mistakes. We end up with over 99% accuracy.

5) Does 3Play Media Offer Captioning Services if I Already Have a Transcript?

Yes: we offer a transcript alignment service. You simply upload your video and the associated transcript, and we will synchronize the two. At this time, we offer this service for English and Spanish content. With transcript alignment, you have access to all of the plugins of the full service product.

6) How Are the Captions Associated with the Original Web Video File?

The captions are kept in a separate file from the video. That is, they are not embedded with the video. The video player knows to recognize that there is a caption track and provides the proper user experience so that the viewer can turn the captions on or off. We offer captions in dozens of different file formats.

7) Can I Edit the Captions?

Yes, you can edit any file because you have full access to the account system. From the My Files section of your account, simply select your file and click “Edit Transcript.” After editing, all associated files will update to your latest version.

8) Can 3Play Media Transcribe Non-English Content?

3Play Media can transcribe content that is in English or Spanish. After transcription, we can translate the content into any language.

The Benefits of Captioning with 3Play Media

9) How Does 3Play Media Work with More Specialized Content?

3Play Media captions highly specialized content, including videos with accents and industry jargon. We work with many large technology companies and universities. To ensure further accuracy, we employ specialized transcriptionists and incorporate glossaries and vocabulary lists into the editing process ahead of time.

10) Can You Submit Slides with a Video?

When submitting content such as webinars, it is helpful to upload a PDF document of the slides. It is used by the transcriptionist as a resource for transcription and helps decipher and clarify difficult content. Also, consider uploading other supporting information, such as product names, people names, terminology, and academic content.

11) How Do Captions Help with SEO?

Google indexes videos by crawling text-based information that you provide such as tags, titles, and descriptions. Captions and transcripts supplement this information and help Google understand your video, increasing the SEO of your video. Because Google can’t watch your video, captions are the next best thing. Captions also increase user engagement: your content becomes more accessible to a wider audience. User engagement plays an integral part in how Google (and YouTube) index your videos.

12) Does 3Play Media Work with Other Platforms and Does This Simplify the Process?

3Play Media have round trip integrations with a number of online video platforms. Among others, we work with Brightcove, Kaltura, Ooyala, Wistia, Limelight, YouTube, Vimeo and Vidcaster. Some lecture capture systems we work with are Mediasite, Echo360, Panopto, and Tegrity. You can find a full list of 3Play Media integrations on our website.

Integrating with video platforms allows you to link your accounts: once you authenticate your 3Play account with your video platform account, you simply have to press a button next to the file you want to process. We ingest the file into our system and automatically send the captioned video back to the right place.
