What the Stats Say About Accessibility
Updated: June 3, 2019
We’ve created a stats page that tells the story of accessibility and online video.
It’s a compilation of the current state of hearing and vision loss, and the growth of online video.
The Stats Don’t Lie
When it comes to accessibility and online video, the stats don’t lie.
The stats reveal that video is progressively becoming a favored form of communication.
Yet, this proliferation of video is alienating a large portion of the population.
Inaccessible video is a problem.
71% of people with disabilities leave a website immediately if it is not accessible.
So why do we keep ignoring the problem?
The stats show that all people use accessibility features like captions and audio descriptions.
In fact, 80% of people who use captions aren’t d/Deaf or hard of hearing.
Luckily, as consumers of videos, we can change this. We can communicate our desires for a greater implementation of universal design principles to the people feeding us content.
Eventually, they will listen, like many already have.
Knowing the Stats
You can find all the stats on the Accessibility and Online Video Stats page.
We cover everything from the state of hearing and vision loss, to the rise of social video, to accessibility in higher education.
Use this as a reference, share it with others, and help spread the word about the need for greater accessibility.
