SPIE – The International Society for Optics and Photonics – is primarily an event organizer and a publisher of conference proceedings for those who do science and engineering using light. Even in that simplistic description of the Society, SPIE serves many different constituencies, such as conference presenters, attendees, authors, researchers, exhibitors, and librarians. And the fields SPIE covers range from astronomy to medical imaging to defense and nanotechnology. As such, the Society serves many people’s needs that can differ greatly or even conflict. Over the past 20 years, SPIE has evolved to address changes in our myriad constituents’ needs. With the impact of the current pandemic, SPIE has had to pivot again.
