Classrooms are changing – how do we adapt? In this session, Dawn Hunziker and Barbie Lopez from the University of Arizona will share best practices for creating an inclusive classroom. They’ll share tips they’ve learned from building accessible courses for the new era.

Dawn Hunziker is the IT Accessibility Consultant, Sr. for the University of Arizona’s Disability Resources. She co-coordinates the UArizona’s IT Accessibility Program to support the University’s commitment to full accessibility of all electronic and information technology employed on campus (itaccessibility.arizona.edu). Her job duties include working with campus units and committees, program managers, content developers, faculty and staff to provide input and proactive solutions regarding accessibility in the IT and academic environments. She also coordinates Assistive Technology availability on campus, collaborates in alternate format production (documents and media), faculty development and accessible course and web design. Dawn currently serves as President of Access Technology Higher Education Network (ATHEN, athenpro.org). Dawn has presented at local, state, and national conferences regarding the UArizona IT Accessibility Program, pdf/web accessibility, captioning processes, and inclusive and accessible curriculum design.

Barbie Lopez is the Digital Accessibility Consultant for the Disability Resource Center (DRC), IT Accessibility Team at the University of Arizona (UArizona). She collaborates across campus to resolve technological access barriers in the curricular, information and employment environments. She consults with University personnel, including DRC staff, in researching, identifying, recommending, and implementing technical solutions to student and employee access barriers; problem-solving technological issues and compatibility concerns in implementing accommodations. Barbie’s background includes extensive experience in accommodation services and ensuring access for class content through the promotion of universal design for learning techniques and practices.


Audio Description: If Your Eyes Could Speak

 




How do you implement, scale, and budget for audio description? What even is audio description? In this session, Joel Snyder, PhD, Audio Description Project, American Council of the Blind, will teach us the ins and outs of audio description, including its benefits, impacts, and implementation.

One of the first audio describers, Joel Snyder, PhD is a true pioneer in the audio description field. He began describing theater events and media in 1981. A member of Actors’ Equity Association, the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists, and the Screen Actors Guild, and a 20-year veteran of work as an arts specialist for the National Endowment for the Arts, is perhaps best known internationally as one of the first “audio describers” at the world’s first audio description service.

In addition to work principally in media and audio description training, Dr. Snyder’s Audio Description Associates, LLC develops audio described tours for major museums and visitor centers throughout the United States including the writing/voicing of an audio described tour of the Enabling Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Albright/Knox Gallery in Buffalo, the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL, several Smithsonian Institution exhibits including the National Museum of American History’s “The Flag That Inspired the National Anthem”, and myriad National Park Service and US Forest Service facilities including Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon. Dr. Snyder trained museum docents in audio description techniques at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and Sackler/Freer Galleries, and the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC, the Seattle Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design and the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City. He also coached Secret Service agents/White House tour guides in AD methods and, as noted above, he is the producer and author of the first-ever audio described tour of The White House. Dr. Snyder worked closely with the Disability Rights Committee of the Obama for America campaign in 2008, serving as a surrogate speaker on disability issues for the Obama campaign, and coordinated live audio description for the Presidential Inauguration Parades in 2009 and 2013.

Dr. Snyder is the recipient of the American Council of the Blind/Audio Description Project’s highest award, the Barry Levine Memorial Career Achievement in Audio Description; he also was named the 2014 recipient of the ACB Vernon Henley Media Award “for promoting and furthering the availability of audio description;” and in April 2015 was awarded the American Foundation for the Blind’s prestigious Access Award.

Krissie is the Head of Digital Influencing at Scope. She has a background in service design and is a strong advocate in the sector for collaboration and co-design. In her previous role at the charity Breast Cancer Care she led on the creation of the award-winning app “BECCA” which harnesses the power of AI to support women after breast cancer treatment.

She’s now running Scope’s Big Hack, a program which seeks to make the digital world more inclusive. With the consumer power of disabled customers at its core, it’s mission is to make sure websites, apps and online services are accessible to everyone. The Big Hack offers a free resource hub to help product teams engage with accessibility, and a crowd-sourcing tool to identify where the problems are for disabled people in the online world. The Big Hack also delivers training and support for people and businesses who want to learn how they can practice accessibility too.
