A Full Recap of ACCESS at Home 2020

Updated: January 26, 2021

ACCESS at home logo

From May 27-29, 2020 we held our first-ever virtual conference, ACCESS at Home! 🎉

Our team spent months preparing for our annual in-person event, where accessibility enthusiasts from across the country gather together to learn about the latest in web and video accessibility.

Due to Covid-19, we decided to prioritize our attendees’ safety and shift gears to an online-only conference instead. ACCESS is a super important event to us at 3Play, so the idea of postponing it just wasn’t an option for us because we still wanted to come together as a community.

We quickly adjusted and planned to ensure the success of our event. Because it was remote, it was a priority to make it engaging, interactive, and most importantly, accessible. As a video accessibility company, we’ve always rallied behind the importance of captioning for engagement and it was great to do that in our first virtual event!

The conference spanned over three days with a number of sessions led by industry experts and workshops hosted by 3Players.

ACCESS at Home was our most registered event in 3Play history, with just over 1400 registrants!

Although we couldn’t meet in person this year, ACCESS at Home was a great time for professionals from every industry to learn, share, engage as a community. In this post, we’ll recap the sessions and workshops from the event in case you might’ve missed them or are just looking for a refresher.

Video Accessibility Toolkit for Success in a Virtual Environment with Jaclyn Leduc and Samantha Sauld 🧰

We kicked things off with our very own, Jaclyn Leduc and myself, Samantha Sauld. In this session, we showed how to use video accessibility to create an inclusive environment, while also improving your SEO, brand experience, and engagement.

As our reliance on video grows, so does the need for video accessibility, which is crucial for making online videos accessible to everyone.

Attendees walked away understanding the importance of video accessibility tools like captioning, audio description, live captioning, interactive transcripts, and how they benefit all viewers, not just those with disabilities.

This session even came with a free guided workbook so that you can use what you’ve learned in a real-world application.

Your Leaders are Listening: Accessibility in the Time of Covid-19 with Thomas Tobin 📝

Last, but certainly not least, our final session was with Program Area Director of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Thomas Tobin.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, access barriers to learning affect everyone. This interactive, research-based session with Thomas gives you meaningful tools to radically re-frame UDL away from a disability mindset and toward broader arguments about online learner persistence, retention, and satisfaction. You’ll be able to obtain advocacy and support from your campus and organizational leaders.

Additionally, learn how to create executive-format messaging that describes learning interactions that save instructors time, encourage innovative ideas, and lower dropout and turnover rates, define evidence that shows how inclusive design gives learners more time and options for study and practice in their busy days, and reframe conversations about UDL to the broad applicability of access via emerging technologies.
