Amazon to Caption 190K+ Films and TV Shows by 2017
Updated: June 3, 2019
Amazon struck a deal with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) to ensure that Amazon’s library of over 190,000 TV shows and films will get closed captioning, the NAD announced in a recent press release.
Amazon Prime Video is already fully captioned, but this agreement will tackle Amazon’s archive of Instant Video that doesn’t yet have captions. New additions to the Amazon Prime video offerings will also have closed captions.
An Amazon spokesperson said:
“Amazon has long been committed to making its video content available to all of its customers. We have already undertaken, at our own expense, to provide captions on titles that content providers have not provided.
As a result, all content available through Prime Video has been captioned since the beginning of this year and we already offer an extensive selection of captioned content.
We are happy to partner with NAD to extend captions even deeper into our back catalog of titles.”
Amazon will prioritize captioning for videos that get at least 10 views in the past 90 days. They currently include closed captioning on 85% of such streaming video.
The plan moving forward is to add captions to 90% of such content by 2016. Amazon aims to have 100% of these videos captioned by 2017.
Attorney Arlene Mayerson, who represented the NAD in this deal as well as in the NAD v. Netflix case on closed captioning, applauded the decision:
The closed captions on Amazon video will comply with FCC caption quality standards for accuracy, placement, timing, and completeness.
