[INDUSTRY REPORT] The 2018 State of Captioning

Last year we introduced our multi-industry annual report, The State of Captioning. This report is meant to capture a snapshot of how organizations across numerous industries implement and perceive video captioning.
Producing this report annually will allow us to document changes in captioning trends from year to year in order to benefit content marketers, web accessibility advocates, administrators, and other involved or interested parties.
This year we are back with the 2018 State of Captioning, an informative and interesting report to share how captioning needs and trends have changed from the previous year. The data in this report comes from a survey taken by 1,542 individuals from various industries, including higher education, corporate, media & entertainment, government, religious organizations, and nonprofit organizations.
A lot Has Changed, and A Lot Has Stayed the Same
So what’s the long and short of it? A lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same! Yea, we know… that’s not very helpful. But we want you to read the full report to get the whole picture. That being said, here’s a brief look at what you can expect to find when you download and read the full report.
Video is growing exponentially. 29% of organizations report publishing more than 500 hours of video content annually, and that number can be expected to grow. In fact, by 2019, 80% of the world’s internet traffic will be video. In case there was any question, we specifically asked survey respondents if they expect their captioning needs to change in the next year, to which 75% reported that they see their captioning needs increasing next year. As online video continues to grow, the need for captioning will too. The real question is not if it will change, but how it will change.
A Sneak Peek on What You’ll Find:
- Budget is the number one barrier to implementing captions. As video increases, budgets will need to increase as well, and we are already seeing that trend from 2017 to 2018. However, budget has continued to be a major barrier.
- Implementing a policy for captioning compliance is another area where changes seem to be happening. In 2017, 45% of survey respondents reported that they have a policy for captioning compliance, or are in the process of establishing one. The 2018 survey results found that this number has increased in the last year.
- The amount of video published – and captioned – on Facebook from 2017 to 2018 has jumped significantly.
