Indiana State Web Accessibility Laws
Updated: June 3, 2019
The state of Indiana’s official government web accessibility policy states:
In the spirit of this commitment, Indiana Code 4-13.1-3 was created to ensure all state information technology equipment, software, and systems used by the public or state employees complies with the accessibility standards of Section 508 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 508).
With the guidance of the state’s Assistive Technology Standards Group (ATSG), we are making progress toward this commitment. We are continually monitoring pages on our site and making necessary modifications to remove accessibility obstacles.
Such modifications would include adding alt text to images and graphs, ensuring that buttons and divs are accessible by keyboard, and including closed captions on videos.
The ATSG was formed in 2001 by Indiana’s Information Technology Oversight Commission (ITOC) to set standards for assistive technology procurement for the state. The group includes representation from:
- Indiana’s Civil Rights Commission
- Indiana’s Protection and Advocacy Commission
- Indiana’s Division of Disability, Aging and Rehabilitation Services
- Indiana Interactive, Inc.
- Procurement Division and Assistive Technology Through Action in Indiana
- State employee with a disability
