Frequently Asked Questions About Captioning and Transcription
Updated: June 7, 2019
3Play Media provides closed captioning, transcription, audio description, and subtitling solutions. There’s more to what we do, though. With that said, you may have several questions about how we do what we do, how much it costs, and other features and services that we offer.
Below, we answer a compilation of frequently asked questions to help you get to know us better.
The Cost of Captioning and Transcription
The cost is based on the length of the video. We charge per minute so the price will be higher for longer videos. There’s no minimum fee per file: if you only have one minute of content, you only pay for one minute. A more detailed breakdown of the cost is available on our website.
I don’t have substantial captioning needs, is there an option for me to use 3Play Media’s service without a commitment?
Yes – for our customers who have light captioning needs and need videos captioned every now and then, we offer an Express plan. Captioning starts at $3.00 per minute, and there’s no minimum requirement.
I DO have substantial captioning needs and am looking for a long-term captioning solution, what are my options?
Yes – on the other hand, we offer plans for those with steady captioning needs. Our Pro plan starts at $2.50 per minute with a $750 minimum commitment and provides more advanced account features and support.
Our Enterprise plan requires a 30-hour minimum commitment and provides the best discounts for those with a lot of captioning needs. Contact us for pricing and more information.
The Process of Captioning and Transcription
We use a three-step process for transcription and captioning. The first step is putting the content through automatic speech recognition software. Next, we have trained editors who go in and edit the generated transcript using an editing platform that we built. The editor adds speaker identification, punctuation, corrects all mistakes left by the engine, and adds non-verbal cues. Finally, we put it through a quality check, where a trained QA editor goes through again to look for any remaining mistakes. We end up with over 99% accuracy.
I already have a transcript, can I get captions, too?
Yes – we offer a transcript alignment service. You just upload your video and the associated transcript, and we will synchronize the two. At this time, we offer this service for English and Spanish content, but you have the option to use our translation service after the fact. With transcript alignment, you also have access to all of the plugins of the full-service product.
What if I already have captions and want to order other services?
We have an option for those who already have captions yet would like to utilize our other services and features: Caption Import. Caption Import lets you upload captions you already have and allows you to manage them with the tools available in your 3Play Media account.
From there, you can create interactive transcripts, convert your caption file format, and translate your captions into another language, among other things.
What if I need non-English captions?
3Play Media offers other language transcription for nearly two dozen languages such as Spanish, French, and Arabic. Our translation services are seamlessly integrated with our captioning and transcription services. If we don’t offer transcription for your desired language, we can translate the content into almost any language after transcription.
The Benefits of Using 3Play Media
In this portion of our frequently asked questions, we answer questions about the benefits of using 3Play Media. We provide captioning and transcription, of course, but we strive to make your experience seamless and effortless.
How does 3Play Media work with more specialized content?
3Play Media captions highly specialized content, including videos with accents and industry jargon. We work with many large technology companies and universities. To ensure further accuracy, we employ specialized transcriptionists and incorporate glossaries and vocabulary lists into the editing process ahead of time.
Can using 3Play Media really help improve my SEO?
Google indexes videos by crawling text-based information that you provide such as tags, titles, and descriptions. Captions and transcripts supplement this information and help Google understand your video, increasing the SEO of your video. Because Google can’t watch your video, captions are the next best thing. Captions also increase user engagement: your content becomes more accessible to a broader audience. User engagement plays an integral part in how Google (and YouTube) index your videos.
How well can 3Play Media integrate with my current video platform?
3Play Media has round trip integrations with many online video platforms. We work with Brightcove, Kaltura, Ooyala, Wistia, Limelight, YouTube, and Vimeo, among others. Some lecture capture systems we work with are Mediasite, Echo360, Panopto, and Tegrity. You can find a full list of 3Play Media integrations on our website.
Integrating with video platforms allows you to link your accounts: once you authenticate your 3Play account with your video platform account, you just have to press a button next to the file you want to process. We ingest the file into our system and automatically send the captioned video back to the right place.
